About Pan Head Screws
A low, flat-topped head with a generous bearing surface and a cross recess drive, to ISO 7045 and DIN 7985. The workhorse machine screw: it sits on the surface rather than in it, spreads load over a wider area than a cap screw, and needs no counterbore.
Where it fits
Pan head is the right answer when the hole is a plain through hole in sheet or plate and nothing has to sit flush. The wide bearing face is forgiving of a slightly oversize hole and of softer materials — plastic housings, thin aluminium, sheet steel.
About the cross recess
A cross recess is designed to cam out under excessive torque. That is a feature on an assembly line and a nuisance on a bench: it is what chews up the head when a driver is worn or the wrong size. Match the driver number to the screw and press down hard. Where torque matters more than speed, a socket head cap screw is the better fastener.
